As many of you know, we spent 4.5 weeks in Europe this April primarily visiting family and friends. Other than that, my main goal during our stay in England was to visit one of my favorite places on earth…almost sacred to me – Taco Bell. OK that is going a little too far, but I DO love Taco Bell and will miss it when we are living in the Netherlands. Unfortunately there is not a location near Bristol or Alnwick where we usually go to visit people when in the U.K. Instead we hit up the Barnsley location on our drive up North. I was so excited I could hardly stand it!
First of all, check out the interior! Metal bucket chairs, stools, hanging industrial style pendant lights. Where am I!? This is the Taco Bell I grew up with!
The menu was essentially the same with the exception of a few menu items. They have something called “Mexican Fries”. It is described as “freshly prepared fries topped with our signature Mexican flavoured seasoning.” It sounds delicious, but its definitely been added for a UK audience. Speaking of which – I don’t understand why Americans are thought to love french fries so much. I honestly see fries of all sorts on the menu at more British and Dutch restaurants than anywhere in America.
I digress – I did not order the “Mexican Fries”, but I did order one item I love, and one item that would be a good base comparison. A crunchwrap supreme and a bean burrito. Can we just look at this bean burrito for a second? How amazing does that look? Its full and grilled on both sides. And this is real folks! I took these photos and ate this glorious thing myself.
We all know what a bean burrito in an American Taco Bell looks like don’t we? Well for those of us that don’t…feast your eyes. Not only did the U.K. bean burrito look amazing, but it tasted loads better. It didn’t have that signature mushy inside that the American version has. But it had distinct ingredients and flavors all in a crispy grilled tortilla.
Ok, on to the crunchwrap. To be honest, unlike the bean burrito, this item was pretty much exactly the same as it is in the U.S. Grilled wrap, cheesy sauce, seasoned ground beef…yep pretty much the same!
Conclusion: Taco Bell U.K. seems to be a lot fancier and overall better quality presentation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ingredients are better too. Oh, they also have free USB power stations. So…..who wants to meet me for a Taco Bell U.K. 2017 burrito celebration?
