For the past few years Piet and I have toyed with the idea of buying a live edge dining room table made from a Pacific Northwest wood. The dining nook in our Portland home is very size restrictive, so we never felt like it made sense to invest in a smaller than usual table for a house we would not be in forever.
When the decision was made to move to the Netherlands, the idea of having a table pulled on our heart strings once again. We thought who else better to get the job done than our friend and incredibly talented craftsman, Tom Lips! Thankfully he agreed to do the job, and he and Piet set of hunting for the right piece of wood.
They found a really nice slab of Big Leaf Maple from right here in Oregon at a place called Moxon Hardwoods in NE Portland. They had it cut into three smaller slabs and loaded it up into Tom’s iconic Suburban. The slabs made their way to his workshop in Ridgefield Washington. From there Tom sanded the them down and discovered how beautiful this wood truly was! It has what is called quilting, and happens to only be found in the Wester Big Leaf species of Maple. Lucky us!
We stopped by the shop to make some decisions on stain, edges, and the wood for the Dutchman to keep the cracks in the wood from expanding. We chose a lovely Purple Heart and it turned out fab! Then Tom worked and worked and made some magic…
Ain’t she a beaut? This table turned out better than we could have ever imagined and it will surely be a family heirloom piece now. Tom delivered the top and Piet helped him screw the legs on and put it into place. We used the metal hairpin legs we had on our previous dining table. Waste not want not!
Thank you Tom for all your hard work on this!
We actually said Good Bye to Tom and his wife Tina last night as they are heading up to Whistler and will be gone during our departure from Portland. He left us with this tear jerker written lovingly on the bottom of our new table. We love you guys! Until next time!
If anyone is interested in connecting with Tom regarding a sweet project you want done, feel free to contact me and I will put you in touch!
